How to make an Asymmetric Flower Display
2. Asymmetric Arrangement - POPPY BLUSH
Here is your step-by-step guide to creating an asymmetric dried flower display using a Floribana stand.
This style mimics aspects of the Moribana style of Ikebana, by using the relationship between the height of three main stems. The finished display is modern and minimalist. For a larger, fuller display, add more stems.
Ingredients
x3 Pussy Willow Branches salix
x3 Poppy Seed Heads papaver
x6 Bushy Stems of Wild Oats avena fatua
Tools: Florist's scissors (fine snipers), secateurs and some stem off-cuts.
Instructions
- a) Position your stand with one side facing forwards. Choose the longest pussy willow branch. Take the other 2 branches: trim 1 to around half the length of the longest; take the last branch and trim to around two-thirds of the longest branch. TIP: If you have a stem with a natural fork you can incorporate this into the design.
- b) Insert the 3 pussy willow stems into the large hole to the left of the centre hole.
- c) Stablise and position by using some stem off-cuts if necessary. TIP: This technique can be used for stablising any part of your arrangement. Using the tension between stems you can choose which direction each face.
- d) Choose the longest poppy seed head. Trim the remaining two poppy heads to the same proportions as for the pussy willow, so that you have three different lengths of stem.
- e) Insert 2 of the 3 poppy seed heads into the central hole and add a small off-cut stem to hold the third poppy head in place.
- f) Insert the last poppy head, swivel and twist into position.
- g) Take the wild oat stems and sort into sizes: tall, medium, short. Add the tallest at the back.
- h) Finish by adding the shorter wild oat stems in the centre hole. Move gently into position: face the stems front and sideways.
